Amber Patrice Riley was born on February 15, 1986, and was raised in Long Beach, California.
It’s hard to believe that one of the fabulous singers on the hit Fox TV show Glee could be turned down by American Idol. But Amber Riley, who plays Mercedes Jones on Glee, faced just that. She auditioned at age 17 and didn’t even get to see the judges. She was turned down by the producers in one of the earlier rounds. But that rejection didn’t slow her down. She found an even better gig on another Fox TV show.
Amber also appeared in the pilot episode of St. Sass. While the show was never picked up by a network, it did introduce her to Ryan Murphy, who would remember her when she auditioned for his new show, Glee.
She was cast on Glee as the fierce Mercedes Jones after creator Ryan Murphy saw her in an episode of Cedric the Entertainer, and post St. Sass. Since being cast, Amber has made her mark on the world by singing the anthem at the 2010 World Series, performing at numerous benefits and shows, winning a SAG award, travelling the world, and receiving gold and platinum awards.
