Jada Pinkett Smith was born to Robson Pinkett Jr. and Adrienne Banfield in Baltimore, Maryland. Her father was a contractor and her mother was a nurse. They divorced after only a few months of marriage. She majored in dance and choreography at the Baltimore School for the Arts, where one of her classmates was Tupac Shakur. She spent a year at the North Carolina School of the Arts before dropping out to pursue her career in acting.
Jada Pinkett-Smith began her career on the popular "Cosby Show" (NBC, 1984-92) spin-off, "Another World" (NBC, 1987-1993), and in only a few years, found herself literally in "another world" as a leading film actress, television producer, and one of Hollywood's most notorious have-it-all moms, married to the biggest movie star in the world. As an ambitious newcomer in the early 1990s, Pinkett-Smith might have floated by on her sheer will and charismatic screen presence alone, but she made her mark by resisting being stereotyped into the usual one-dimensional roles allotted for African-American actresses. From the blockbuster family comedy "The Nutty Professor" (1996) to the dramatic biopic "Ali" (2001) to "The Matrix Reloaded" (2003) sci-fi phenomenon, Pinkett-Smith's versatility and intense energy eventually overflowed the screen and she expanded into producing and directing. Pinkett-Smith was also widely admired in Hollywood for her high-profile marriage to top box office draw Will Smith, the enviable team managing to maintain a happy home life with three kids in addition to collaborating on big and small screen projects together, most notably, as co-creators of the popular sitcom "All of Us" (UPN/CW, 2003-07).
