Sparks is the daughter of former NFL football player, Phillippi Sparks, and wife Jodi Sparks. She has a younger brother named PJ (Phillippi Sparks, Jr.). As a daughter of a Black father and a White mother, she is biracial. She is managed by maternal grandmother Pam Wiedmann. Her aunt Shari is an actress & model.Sparks is currently homeschooled. She is a fan of football, reading, and music. She also attends church. She has been singing since she was 18 months old.

Jordin has had her share of playacting. She performed in the play entiled: "Magdalene", having the dual roles of Bea and Deborah. She also played parts in Arizona's Valley Youth Theater. Sparks' very first appearance was in the play: "The Wiz" in March of 2002, where she played the roles of one of Emerald City's dancers and as a plant, to be specific, "a poppy". Other productions she has joined include Cinderella and another series of The Wiz.

At the age of thirteen, Sparks launched an album entitled: "For Now", which contained a total of five songs, mostly about Christianity. She collaborated with Matthew Ward who was a Christian artist as well as with Gary Leach, a sound engineer who had prior experience working with Leann Rimes. Jordin was also featured in "Live at Mr. Lucky's", a compilation album which was released in 2004. In the year 2007, Jordin Sparks became one of the hopefuls in Americal Idol, and also became one of the favorites of the judges. She bagged the title of American Idol 2007.
