Welsh actor and model Andy Whitfield was born on July 17, 1972 in Amlwich, Wales. He moved to Australia in 1999 and settled there, but originally didn't intend to become part of the entertainment industry. He worked as an engineer instead. However, he decided to attend Screenwise Film & TV School for Actors, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. This led to a number of appearances in Australian TV series like All Saints, McLeod's Daughters, The Strip, All Saints and Packed to the Rafters.
Andy Whitfield always commanded attention in front of the camera. The fashion model-turned-actor first gained a foothold with appearances on Australian television dramas before winning the title role in the blockbuster action-thriller, "Gabriel" (2007), as an archangel who fought to save the souls in purgatory. The physically challenging part likely prepared Whitfield for his next role as the infamous Roman gladiator on the American historical drama, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" (Starz!, 2010- ).
