Mara was born on Feb. 27, 1983 in the Westchester County, NY town of Bedford. There, she was raised along with three siblings - older brother Daniel, younger sister Patricia and younger brother Conor - by the parents of an NFL dynasty. Mara's father, Chris Mara, was a VP of player evaluation for the New York Giants. Her grandfather, Wellington, owned the team, which her great-grandfather Tim originally founded. On her mother's side, Mara's great-grandfather, Art Rooney, was equally established in the sport, having founded the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kate Mara began her career in the world of films when she was 14-years old. Her film debut was with the movie Law & Order in 1997. She also appeared in Random Hearts by Sydney Pollack in 1999. She also appeared on the award-winning films in the Sundance Film Festival like the Tadpole and Joe the King. This hot and witty Hollywood actress also appeared in the critically acclaimed, Academy Award-winning film Brokeback Mountain. The films Full of It and The Return of Zoom just recently add to her name. Kate Mara has been busy, currently taping the film inspired by the 1970 Marshall University plane crash; We Are Marshall.

Also in 2007, Mara finished the film Transsiberian by Brad Anderson, which takes place on the Trans-Siberian Railway that runs from China to Moscow. The cast included Woody Harrelson, Ben Kingsley, Eduardo Noriega and Emily Mortimer. Mara spent three months shooting the thriller in Vilnius, Lithuania, starting in December 2006. The film also shot on location in Beijing and Russia. Mara played Abby, a 20-year-old runaway from Seattle, a character she described to MoviesOnline as "dark", "mysterious", "sort of goth", and did not talk much. Transsiberian premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival in January 2008.
