Iman was born in Atlanta, Georgia on December 1, 1990. She grew up in Los Angeles, California. Her mother is co-owner of "The Red Bag Boutique" in Los Angeles with her. Her mother is half Korean and her father is African American.

Chanel Iman is the American indication of part-Korean birthright who became a unchanging in the Victoria’s Secret fast in 2009. Chanel Iman was “named after mythological engineer Coco Chanel,” according a Page Six Magazine story in 2009.
