Agena was born and raised in Honolulu, where she lived until she was 17. She made her acting debut at the age of 10 with a small part in the play The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. She enjoyed the experience so much that she decided to continue performing. Her parents were very supportive, with her mother taking her to auditions and helping her memorize lines for roles in community theater productions.

After high school, Agena studied drama at Whitman College in Washington State. She came to Los Angeles during the summer break after her first year and has been working steadily in theater, television and film ever since. Her very first professional audition resulted in a guest spot on the television series Renegade.

During the early 1990s, Keiko Agena landed roles in shows like Renegade and Sister, Sister, and was seen on an episode of ER and Beverly Hills, 90210. She was also given a part in Terror In the Shadows and Hundred Percent, before her rise to fame. In 2000, she was seen as Lane Kim on the CW series Gilmore Girls. Her character was the Korean-American best friend of Rory Gilmore, played by Alexis Bledel. Agena later appeared in the series Felicity, and became the recipient of an Ammy Award for Best Female Actor in a Television Series in 2007. Her other appearances include those in Strong Medicine, Without a Trace, The Nightmare Room and Private Practice. She has also voiced the character Yori in four episodes of the Disney animated series, Kim Possible. Agena’s film credits are Chances Are, Hair Show, The Perfect Party, Western Avenue, Red Thread, Cats and Mice, and Tomatoes and Eggs. She is also a member of the Meisner-based ITC ensemble and the acting company called “hereandnow” which tours around the country staging original pieces. In May 2007, she was chosen as one of People magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People in the World. In 2008, she landed the role of Private Hamamori in Major Movie Star.
